"A Millennium Monument with a Difference"
A Millennium Monument with a Difference
The Cubs, Brownies and Guides of Frensham wish to build a Millennium monument - but with a difference. It will be virtually invisible in Frensham and clearly visible in India and Africa. For they wish to raise money to support the work of Water Aid.
Water Aid seeks to help both the 1.4 billion people, about a quarter of the world's population, who cannot pour themselves a glass of clean -star end the 2 billion people who have no access to proper sanitation.
By organising sponsored events and the like, and by inviting all members of our parish, Dockenfield and Frensham, each to contribute £1, the children hope to raise some £2000. The sum raised will then be invested by the St Mary's Frensham Trust, a parish charity, the interest on the capital being donated annually to Water Aid.
The children hope that their "Millennium Monument with a difference" will allow everyone in our parish to participate - even a young child will be able to afford £1; ' to retain a 'wider than parish' perspective on our Millennium celebrations; and to be able to say, years after the year 2000, 'my £1 is still helping provide clean water and safe sanitation'.
In short, the Cubs, Brownies and Guides want to celebrate the Millennium year to such a way that the Millennium party continues for many, many years beyond the year 2000. So save your pennies; donate your pound coin; and thankful thousands will raise a glass of clean water and drink your health.
